4 online dating tips for seniors looking for love in Canada

An rising number of elderly Canadians are resorting to internet dating to find a new life partner or simply a date to the symphony.

Jennifer Cairns, co-founder of eGurus, a digital tutoring company for those over 55, says, “I’m finding more and more seniors getting online every day; that’s one of the fastest groups converting to technology.”

Next week in Victoria, Cairns will conduct a workshop to help individuals navigate internet dating. Are you a senior looking for love? The following are some helpful hints from Cairns:

1. Create a separate email

Because not everyone you meet will be a perfect match, you’ll want to keep it a little more private than the email you send to your family and friends.

2. Choose an appropriate website

Many traditional dating websites, such as eHarmony and Plenty of Fish, are now catering to the over 55 audience, which was not something they would have targeted five years ago.

Senior dating services such as Senior Friend Finder, Senior Match, and Senior People Meet cater to seniors.

3. Research websites’ terms and conditions

Before you join up, read the fine print. Put a reminder in your calendar if you have a free trial so you can decide if you wish to continue.

A lot of the time, with paid websites, the renewal is automatic. Check to see if you have the option of opting out.

4. Create an engaging profile

The best policy is to be honest. Having a photograph online generates a significantly greater response, and many websites recommend having action shots.

Make sure your profile is up to date and that your interests and hobbies are detailed. It’s difficult to talk about ourselves, so enlist the support of your friends.

Also, don’t give out too much personal information, as this could reveal things like your address.
