Doogee S95 Pro review

Doogee has released a new phone with modular features. The S95 Pro is a robust Android 9 handset that enables users add additional components to enhance the experience. It’s available today for as little as $360 USD.

In terms of hardware, the Doogee S95 Pro follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, the S90, and falls somewhere between the upper mid-tier and the lower end of the high-tier. It checks many of the boxes we seek for in a “flagship” concept on paper, yet it costs a fraction of what others do.

Doogee S95 Pro

  • 6.3-inch display (2,160 x 1,080 pixels)
  • MediaTek Melio P90 octa-core processor
  • 8GB RAM
  • 128GB storage
  • 48-megapixel Sony camera/triple AI cameras
  • 5150mAh battery with wireless charging
  • IP68 rated
  • Face unlock/fingerprint ID
  • Android 9

Given the aforementioned characteristics, a larger brand name might easily charge $500-$600, or even more, for the phone. How does it hold up in practice? How does the Doogee S95 Pro feel to use? Following are my opinions and impressions of the phone after using it as a secondary device for a few weeks.

The Doogee S95 Pro is a phone that delivers packages. You know how they say “through rain, snow, and the dark of night”? That’s the first thing that springs to mind. Regardless of the conditions, the S95 Pro will do what you need it to do, when and when you need it to do it.

The Doogee S95 Pro is a fantastic addition to the increasing line of modern tough smartphones. It runs Android 9 and is powerful enough for all users. It’s crisp and responsive, with none of the bloatware that other smartphones have, which is something we’ve learned to appreciate in unlocked phones.

Although it weighs 10 ounces and has a 6.5-inch screen, it does not feel like a brick. In terms of design, it appears to have come directly from Lucius Fox’s mind for the caped crusader. It’s a fairly sexy and intriguing “rugged” phone with NFC, face unlock, and 128GB built-in memory.

The SIM, SD card, and charging connectors are all covered by click-in ports on the S95 Pro. A screen protector is also pre-installed on the Gorilla Glass 5, and another is included in case of an accident. All of this is to suggest that precautions have been made to ensure the phone’s safety and security.

In my testing, I didn’t have the four hours or the ten feet of water to worry about, but I did watch an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm in the shower, and it worked perfectly. If you want to catch up on news, emails, and other things while showering or bathing, you’ll appreciate the fact that the S95 Pro does as well.

The S95 has a 16-megapixel selfie camera on the front and three camera lenses on the rear with a flash. The main lens, which has a resolution of 48 megapixels, produces stunning images. The wide lens has a wonderful broad perspective, although the edges of my photos were a touch blurry. The zoom lens is also quite good.

In addition to the S95 Pro, I received a 3,500mAh battery and boombox speakers as part of my review unit. The extra battery pack assures plenty of Candy Crush on the camping trip this weekend, given the phone’s already large 5,300mAh power supply.

The S95 Pro can last for at least two days on its own. Put that extra unit on and you’re good for another day or two. Over the course of four days or ordinary usage, you’d undoubtedly have a hard time exhausting everything.

The speaker adapter is also excellent, offering great highs and deep lows that you won’t get from standard smartphone speakers. The speaker attachment also incorporates a kickstand, which is interesting and useful for setting a good viewing angle when watching a movie or listening to a playlist.

When the attachments are attached, they usually join with a reassuring magnetic click. They do have a small movement from side to side, which I discovered. While the attachments are useful for supporting the phone’s functionality, I don’t think I’ll be traveling with them linked.

The phone is a fair size and isn’t too big on its own, but with the battery or speaker attached, it wouldn’t fit in a pocket. They’re the kind of device you’d carry in your car or at work for special needs, and there are more modules available.

I think it’s a terrific smartphone for folks who need comfort and peace of mind, whether on a job site or at Burning Man, at this price. It’ll go everywhere you go and last just as long, if not longer.
